How to Become a Makeup Artist

  1. Get advanced training in airbrush make-up -It's not enough to enjoy applying make-up. You must first find a make up artists school in your area. Pay attention and study faces and eye shapes as well as complexions. Understanding lighting is also a must. Learning to see the way the camera sees is critical. Your advanced training will give you a competitive edge.
  2. Stock or buy a complete professional make-up kit. Understanding how to use this kit is vital. Your kit should include plenty of disposable sponges, make-up wipes, applicators and hand sanitizer.
  3. Boost your career by creating an internet presence through social media and free web listings. But don't stop there. Remain relevant by being familiar with beauty tips, tricks, trends, and news. Most importantly- Promote Yourself. Include pics of your work and keep business cards on hand.
  4. Network by introducing yourself to photographers. Discuss your availability, training or experience in addition to what you charge per model.
  5. Don't work for free.
  6. Train an assistant so you don't have to turn down large jobs.
  7. Don't get stuck in one look- expand your portfolio. If you're good at just one look then your job offers will be limited. Try to perfect your skills in more than one area, but do not spread yourself too thin. You do need to specialize in a few looks, but not all so your talent will be more desirable than someone who has just okay skills with a bunch of different looks.
Most important, you should always consider finding a beauty school in your area.

  • concealers for the rudest acne break outs
  • lipsticks in every shade from white to black with warm and cool eye shadows
  • shimmers and mattes
It's important to understand that the kit doesn't get the job. The Make-Up Artist does!!!!
